RACE PREVIEW: Dover International Speedway

Dover isn’t called the “Monster Mile” for nothing. Miles the Monster has no fear of jumping out and biting unexpecting drivers as they race around the one-mile racetrack. Luckily for Ty Dillon, he’s learned to tame the monster throughout his six years of competition at the track across four different racing series. One of the highlights from his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) rookie year, Dillon led 27 laps of competition in his No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet at Dover in the spring of 2017 after being the first car off of pit road and having a clean restart to drive away from seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson.

This will be Dillon’s fifth MENCS start at Dover. His best finish of 14th place came with the GEICO Racing team in the spring of 2017 after he led 27 laps but was collected in a wreck during the closing laps while running in the fourth spot. Dillon also has 10 NASCAR Xfintiy Series starts to his name at the Monster Mile. He has earned two top-five and seven top-10 finishes. He took the checkered flag in the second position in the fall of 2016 to earn his best NXS finish at Dover. Dillon has two previous NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts there and earned a sixth-place finish in 2012. He also has one K&N Pro Series East start at the Delaware track.

Dillon Weekend Chatter

What was your big takeaway from racing at Dover earlier this year?

“We were a little disappointed with how we ran at Dover earlier this year. Our GEICO Racing team was so strong there last season, but we just didn’t have the speed or the feel for the new Camaro ZL1 body when we were earlier this year. So we know that we have some work to do. Our cars have developed quite a bit since then. When we go back to some of these tracks for the second time in the season, we are looking for massive improvements from where we were at the beginning of the year. We’ve made gains on this body and have gotten it to where we feel that we can be more competitive. Dover will be one of those benchmark tracks for us.”
