After more than a year of anticipation, drivers and teams will finally get to compete on the newly constructed “roval” course at Charlotte Motor Speedway (CMS). Ty Dillon tested his No. 13 GEICO Camaro ZL1 on the course in July to get a feel for it before this weekend’s on-track activities. Unlike many of his fellow drivers, Dillon made it through the test session without a scratch on his car. The 2.28-mile course features 17 turns that will create a challenge that both drivers and teams alike are anxious to tackle.
Dillon has previously raced in three Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series events on the traditional, four-turn CMS track with his GEICO Racing team. A mechanical failure took him out in his first Coca-Cola 600 appearance, but he earned identical 21st-place finishes in his other two starts. He also has nine NASCAR Xfinity Series starts under his belt at CMS. With an average start of 10.7 and an average finish of 12.1, Dillon has earned one top-five and five top-10 finishes. His best finish of fourth place came in the spring event earlier this season. Dillon’s two Camping World Truck Series starts garnered one pole award in 2012, a tenth-place finish that same year and a fifth-place finish in 2013.
Dillon Weekend Chatter
From what little experience you have had with the roval so far, what are you expecting?
“This is going to be a challenge. It’s going to be unique. I think there will be a lot of different strategies in how teams attack the weekend. It’s a fun change, and I’m glad that NASCAR is trying something different with the roval. I know that there has been mixed opinions on it, but we haven’t raced it yet. It could end up being a really great race. I tested it a couple of months ago with my GEICO Camaro ZL1 and felt pretty comfortable. But, it is definitely challenging. There is no room for mistakes, and I think that’s going to cause the most issues for people.”
