RACE PREVIEW: Richmond Raceway

Only nine races remain in the 2018 season. This weekend, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series heads to Richmond Raceway for the second time this year. Richmond Raceway is in the backyard of GEICO’s corporate headquarters, based less than 100 miles away in Chevy Chase, M.D. The 400-mile race will be the last time the No. 13 GEICO Camaro ZL1 races under the lights on a Saturday night this season.

This will be Dillon’s fourth MENCS race at Richmond Raceway. In his previous three races, he earned his best finish of 20th place in this season’s spring race with the GEICO Racing team. He has an average start of 29.0 and an average finish of 22.7. In his 10 NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at the track, Dillon has earned two top-five and seven top-10 finishes. He finished in the runner up position in the spring event of 2016. He has led 19 laps of competition and has an average start of 11.7 and an average finish of 9.3.

Dillon Weekend Chatter

What does your GEICO Racing team plan to take back from the Richmond race earlier this year versus what they plan to leave at home?

“I don’t know how close our setup is to what we ran back in the spring because we tested at Richmond a couple of months ago and learned some new things. We were really happy with our test session; we were fast both days. I know that we’re all feeling confident going back this weekend. Richmond is one of my best tracks, so I’m looking forward to the opportunity that it brings for a good run with this GEICO Camaro ZL1 team.”

It has been five months since NASCAR last raced at Richmond. How do cars evolve and change in that amount of time?

“So many things change in that amount of time. If you took the exact car that won Richmond back in the spring, it would probably struggle to run inside the top 10. Every team, including our GEICO Racing team, is developing new ideas all season long, and it seems like once we hit playoff time it’s particularly ramped up. So, if you brought the same car back with the same exact body specs from the first race this year, performance would more than likely be worse. It’s an ever-changing sport, and that’s what makes it so challenging.”
