RACE PREVIEW: Darlington Raceway
As NASCAR makes its annual trip to Darlington Raceway, Germain Racing is honoring 10 years of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series partnership with GEICO. Driver Ty Dillon will carry the first paint scheme that Germain Racing and GEICO ran together in 2009. Max Papis drove the red and blue colors in the 2009 season, and Casey Mears piloted the No. 13 scheme in 2010 and 2011. The current green and blue scheme was introduced at the start of the 2012 season. This will be the first time the original red and blue paint scheme will be featured on a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.
Dillon has five years of experience at Darlington Raceway, having raced there in both the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) and the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS). He has five NXS starts at the famed racetrack, with two top-10 finishes to his name. Dillon’s best finish of seventh place came in the 2017 season. In the single MENCS race that he ran at Darlington last season with the GEICO Racing team, he finished in the 13th position.
Dillon Weekend Chatter
What are your thoughts as you head back to Darlington?
“I love going to Darlington. I fall more and more in love with it each time that we go back. You have to take care of your equipment when you’re there, and I enjoy that style and mentality of racing. It’s one of the few old-school races that we have left in that sense. I always circle Darlington on my calendar at the start of each season. I’m even more excited to go down there this year because of our throwback paint scheme. We are honoring 10 years of Cup Series partnership between Germain Racing and GEICO with the original paint scheme that they ran together in 2009. Max Papis and Casey Mears drove this scheme before me, and I’m excited to add my name to the list.”
Do you remember your first trip to Darlington as a kid?
“I went down with my grandfather on a Sunday morning. He had flown home from somewhere, so we drove down on race day in his Corvette. This was back in the day when pit boxes had just one or two boat seats on top of it. He and I sat up there and watched the entire race. I don’t think they won that day, but they ran pretty well. We drove all the way home that night together. It’s probably one of the strongest racing memories that I have as a kid.”
Sunday afternoon, Dillon can be found in the fan midway with the GEICO Gecko! He will be at the GEICO display to get race day started by answering fan questions, taking photos, signing autographs and more!
