The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) will visit the second of three road courses on the circuit when teams travel to Watkins Glen International this weekend for the Go Bowling at the Glen race. To complete the 220.5-mile race, drivers will have to survive every turn of the track through all 90 laps. With only one MENCS start at the track under his belt, Ty Dillon is looking to gain more experience when he heads out in his GEICO Camaro ZL1.
Dillon has only one previous MENCS start at The Glen, finishing in the 19th position with the GEICO Racing team last season. He has four previous starts at Watkins Glen International in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS). With an average starting spot of 8.2 and an average finish of 7.8, Dillon has earned one top-five finish and three top-10 finishes. His best finish of fifth place came in the 2015 event.
Dillon Weekend Chatter
You finished in the 19th position there last year with new pavement. How does the track race differently now?
“Surprisingly, I didn’t feel like the racing was a whole lot different. The tire fall off wasn’t as great as it had been in the past because of the new asphalt, but everything else about the racing seemed relatively the same. You’re battling the same thing that you did before which is racing the racetrack of a road course. Watkins Glen really feels like a NASCAR-style road course because everyone that you’re racing against has so much experience there. It has been raced so many times in just about the same configuration, and it seems like most everyone has it figured out. So finishing well at Watkins Glen really comes down to car development. I feel like other road courses are more in the drivers’ hands as far as getting around the track. Watkins Glen really isn’t that at all. Our GEICO Racing team had a good run last season with it being my first Cup start there, and I'm looking forward to going back this weekend to see what we can do.”
