Race Preview: New Hampshire Motor Speedway

NASCAR is going up north! The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) will compete at New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend in a 301-lap event around the “Magic Mile.” Dillon made his first MENCS start at the track last year with the GEICO Racing team and will return this year in his GEICO Camaro ZL1.

Dillon has two previous MENCS starts at New Hampshire. With an average start of 27.5 and an average finish of 19.0, Dillon’s best finish of 16th place came in last season’s summer race with the GEICO Racing team. He also has four starts at the track in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Dillon has an average start of 12.0 and an average finish off 14.8. He has earned two top-10 finishes, the best of which was a sixth-place finish in 2015.

Dillon Weekend Chatter

Why is New Hampshire such a challenging track?

“We go to other racetracks that are flat like New Hampshire, but they are not nearly as fast. It feels like you’re in the corners for such a long time because of the lack of banking. It’s a unique challenge, almost like Martinsville on steroids. It’s really fun, but a tough, tough place to pass. History shows that there’s been a lot of late-race restarts that call for aggressive moves and action to get yourself in a good position. I’m ready to make those moves in our GEICO Camaro ZL1.”

What are your thoughts as you head back to New Hampshire in a Cup car?

“There is no doubt that it is a tough racetrack. We had a good summer race there last year. We were almost able to squeak inside the top-15 there at the end but finished up in 16th place. We had a difficult fall race. I hit the wall in practice, but I feel like we rebounded pretty well from that. I learn more and more about these cars each time we go back to a track, and I don’t think that this weekend will be any different. The more laps I’m able to log and experience I’m able to gain at each track, the better and stronger our finishes will be.”
