Race Preview: Kentucky Speedway
Last weekend at Daytona International Speedway, Ty Dillon and the GEICO Racing team brought home a sixth-place finish, the team’s best finish of the 2018 season. It was also Dillon’s official career-best finish and the first top-10 finish of his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series career. In 2016, Dillon finished in the sixth position at Talladega Superspeedway as a substitute driver for Tony Stewart, but the finish was run, Dillon and Germain Racing will take the GEICO Camaro ZL1 to Kentucky Speedway this weekend.
Dillon has two previous starts in the Cup Series at the 1.5-mile track, and he scored his best finish of 25th place in 2016. He also has seven previous starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Kentucky Speedway, earning three top-five and five top-10 finishes. His highest finish of second place came in 2015 and he earned a pole-position starting spot in 2014. He has led 270 laps of competition. Dillon has four NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts at Kentucky. He has earned three top-five finishes and won the 2013 event after leading 26 laps.
Dillon Weekend Chatter
What are your thoughts as NASCAR heads to Kentucky Speedway?
“I love racing at Kentucky Speedway. I’ve done well there in the past in both the Xfinity Series and the Truck Series. I won a truck race back in 2013, and I’ve come close in Xfinity with a second-place finish. I feel comfortable racing at this track. I’m still trying to get the feel of it in a Cup Series car, but I know that I’ll get there. It just takes laps and patience.”
What makes Kentucky Speedway such a challenge?
“Kentucky went through a repave back in 2016, and it’s always interesting to learn the new quirks of a track as the repave ages and goes through the seasons. These mile-and-a-half tracks that we visit are all so different from each other because they’re all in different stages of repaves. It keeps us all on our toes, and we have to adjust our intermediate package and our plans with every track we visit. Intermediate tracks have been tough for us this year, so we know that we will have some work to do on Friday in practice. But, I’m confident that we can get our GEICO Camaro ZL1 handling how it needs to for the race.”
