GEICO Military Returning to the No. 13 Camaro ZL1 for All-Star Weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway
Speedweeks at Charlotte Motor Speedway have arrived. For the Germain Racing team, this means the return of GEICO Military to the No. 13 Camaro ZL1. The last time Ty Dillon ran the team-favorite “geckoflage” paint scheme, he tied his best career finish of 11th place at Phoenix Raceway in the fall of 2017.
To qualify for Saturday night’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) All-Star Race, Dillon must first compete in the MENCS Open race. All drivers that did not win a race in 2017 or 2018 and are not a previous series champion or All-Star Race winner must earn their way into the race by winning one of the three stages of the Open or be voted in by fans. In his second career start in the Open, Dillon is looking to make his first appearance in the All-Star Race.
Dillon Weekend Chatter
How is your team preparing for a weekend where you’re not guaranteed a spot in the main event?
“The qualifying race for the All-Star Race is very important. We’re going to have to race our way in. There is a fan vote, but you don’t want to rely on that because there’s always tough competition. You want to show up with a car capable of winning a stage and advancing that way. We’re going to work hard in practice to take advantage of everything that we can in the qualifying race. Making it into the All-Star Race would be huge for our GEICO Military team.”
What is the pressure like in the build up to try and advance to the All-Star Race?
“When you head into the qualifying race knowing that there are only four available spots to transfer into the All-Star Race, the pressure is high to grab one of them. It’s going to be intense. The Open doesn’t pay in points, so you’re going to be aggressive to do all you can to get yourself into one of those positions to advance. You never know what is going to happen, especially with the new aero package that we will run. Anyone can win the race, and I know that our GEICO Military team is going to be working hard to win it.”
