RACE PREVIEW: GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway

Ty Dillon to Take on Talladega Superspeedway in the GEICO 500

Weekend Notes

Ty Dillon and the GEICO Racing team are coming off a hard-fought, top-20 finish in Richmond as they head to Talladega Superspeedway this weekend for the GEICO 500. Dillon will take to the track with the GEICO colors on his No. 13 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the famed gecko on the hood. GEICO and Talladega Superspeedway are using #GEICO500 on social media to allow everyone the opportunity to follow along and join the conversation!

Dillon will make his third official Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start at Talladega Superspeedway when he takes the green flag for the GEICO 500 this Sunday. He competed in both races of the 2017 season as a rookie, tying his best finish of the year after finishing 11th in the fall race. He has led three laps of competition at the 2.66-mile track. In the 2016 season, Dillon stepped in as a relief driver for Tony Stewart in the GEICO 500 and finished the race in sixth place for the NASCAR veteran. Dillon also has five previous NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at the track. He has scored one top-10 finish after placing eighth in 2015 and has led 34 laps of competition. Having been a former NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver, Dillon has also logged two truck races there. His best finish of fourth place came in 2012, the same year in which he started on the pole. In those two starts, he led 51 laps.

Dillon Weekend Chatter

What are your thoughts as you prepare for the GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway?

“I’m ready to get to Talladega for the GEICO 500. It is so different from Daytona. It has such a different feel. The drafting is similar, but it’s a much wider track and allows you to make more moves. The strategy is the same in that you have to decide whether or not you want the stage points or if you want to ride in the back and avoid the crashes. It seems like the last five or six superspeedway races have been all about survival, so that may change how we plan for the race. In Daytona, we were really aggressive and running up front to get all that we could out of Stage 1, but then we got caught up in a crash. We started our year from behind because of it. Our team has gained momentum here in the last few weeks, and hopefully we can keep that going when we get our GEICO Camaro ZL1 to Talladega this weekend.”
