RACE PREVIEW: Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Weekend Notes

Ty Dillon and Germain Racing’s first on-track experience with the No. 13 GEICO Camaro ZL1 came in January when the team tested at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Crew Chief Matt Borland and the team have studied their notes all month to prepare for this weekend’s trip back to “Sin City” with the new body. Las Vegas will be the second intermediate track of the season for NASCAR teams after racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway this past weekend. After finishing in the 26th position in Atlanta battling a car that lacked forward drive, the GEICO Racing team is looking to use their learnings from the year and Dillon’s past success in Las Vegas to continue building their intermediate track program.

This Sunday’s race will be Dillon’s second start at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Cup Series. He made his rookie debut last year and finished in the 21st position. In his previous five starts at the 1.5-mile track in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Dillon has earned two top-10 finishes, with his best finish of seventh place coming in 2016. He earned the pole award in 2014. Dillon also has two Las Vegas starts in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. He scored one top-five and two top-10 finishes along with a pole award in 2013.

Dillon Weekend Chatter

You tested the GEICO Camaro ZL1 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway earlier this year. What did you learn during that test? What are you expecting when you return this weekend?

“I think the test went really well for us. We learned a lot about ourselves as a team on top of what we learned about the car. It was our first time on track with Matt Borland as our crew chief, and it was an important opportunity to get to know how each other works. We gathered a lot of information from that test that we’re still learning from to this day as we pack up and prepare for Vegas this week. It was very productive for us. I’m glad that we got to go out there and make some laps in the Camaro ZL1 to get a good feeling for what it has. We definitely had results that we can build on. So I’m looking forward to going back now that we’ve been able to study our notes from both that test and this past weekend in Atlanta, another mile-and-a-half track.”
