The Driver’s Wheel…thoughts from Ty Dillon

…on how about his Darlington Raceway :

“I love Darlington. It’s one of those places that kind of grows on you as a driver the more you go back because it’s such a tough race track in general, then, throwing 40 cars out there with you, it's really challenging. I think the more experience you get there, it definitely helps. We are going back with a Smokey Yunick throwback based on Johnny Rutherford's NASCAR debut race car. The 1963 Impala paint scheme looks really cool as a GEICO Chevrolet SS. I'm looking forward to doing the whole throwback weekend in Darlington.”

… on his Darlington throwback paint scheme...

“It’s something with the No. 13 that is special between Germain Racing and Smokey Yunick's family and to Johnny Rutherford. It’s really cool to have that car and pay homage to some really important history to our sport. It's also great to be able to run Johnny's rookie paint scheme while I'm in my rookie season in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.”

Crew Chief Quips from Bootie Barker:

…on whether #NASCARThrowback weekend changes things for your team?

"I have to say, what it does, is, it certainly raises the bar. Every weekend, we take what we believe is our best car to the track. Period. That doesn't change. But when you get to run a car that's representing a part of NASCAR's history, it really gives everyone on the team just an extra bit of pride. GEICO really has embraced this weekend and we all love seeing the GEICO Chevy in black and gold for Darlington.”

…on what this year's paint scheme mean to you?

"It's really pretty cool. Our GEICO Chevrolet is designed to replicate the 1963 Chevy Impala that Johnny Rutherford drove in his first NASCAR race for Smokey Yunick. He won. It was a Daytona qualifier race, which paid points in that time. Johnny is at the track this weekend, and he's really a racing legend. He enjoyed the engineering aspect of his race cars. He fits in great with our guys.”

Paint Scheme Notes: No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS

  • This weekend, our No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS features associate sponsorship from Twisted Tea, Sherwin Williams Automotive Finishes, ZAK Products, Wix Filters and Caymus Vineyards. Germain Racing is proud to be a Lincoln Electric team

  • In 1963, Johnny Rutherford made his NASCAR debut driving for team owner Smokey Yunick. He drove the No. 13 Chevy to victory lane – a feat no one has since matched.

  • This year’s paint scheme is a throwback to 1963, Yunick’s Chevrolet Impala, which Rutherford drove to capture a closed course speed record meanwhile topping qualifying efforts after a lap for lap shootout with Junior Johnson

  • Last year, the No. 13 GEICO Chevy was also a tribute to Smokey Yunick. That car was meant to look like Yunick’s famously mysterious Chevelle

  • Darlington was a special track to Smokey Yunick. He loved it, according to daughter Trish

  • “I didn’t think much of the car number. It was Smokey’s car and that’s what made the difference.” – Johnny Rutherford III

  • “That car was so strong and fun to drive. It will be great to see a recreation of the car have life again.” – Johnny Rutherford III, on his first ever stock car which he drove to victory in 1963 at Daytona

  • The 1963 Chevy Impala had the infamous 427 “Mystery Motor” under the hood, and a seemingly random circle on the decklid. Everything “Yunick” has a back story. “NASCAR told Smokey they couldn’t see his car (for scoring it). So, that was his solution. He put a giant fluorescent red dot on the decklid.” – Johnny Rutherford III

  • The No. 13 car number has over 500 starts in NASCAR’s top series, and only one win

  • Yunick is has 78 race starts as a car owner. He fielded the No. 13 in 20 of those starts

  • No other team in Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series has fielded the No. 13 car number more than Bob Germain. Germain has made 284 starts – 275 with GEICO or GEICO Military as the primary sponsor
