The Driver’s Wheel…thoughts from Ty Dillon

…on racing the No. 13 GEICO Military Chevrolet SS in The Monster Energy Open:

"This weekend, I'm making my first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start at Charlotte Motor Speedway. I'm glad we get to take the GEICO Military Chevrolet SS there for The Monster Energy Open. It gives this Germain Racing team and me a chance to get set for the Coca-Cola 600. And it gives me maybe a chance to drive a bit more aggressively. The Monster Energy Open is like three chances to practice scoring stage points at Charlotte Motor Speedway. That could come in handy for the 600."

What Is the Monster Energy Open?

The Monster Energy Open is a qualifying race for drivers that are not already locked into the Monster Energy All-Star race which will be run later Saturday night, at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Both The Open and the All-Star races are exhibition events that pay purse money but do not award championship points.

The Monster Energy Open field will be set by two rounds of traditional knock-out qualifying that begins on Saturday at 4:35 p.m. ET on FS1. The Open race will include three stages (20 laps, 20 laps, 10 laps) and the winner of each stage will earn a spot in the All-Star race. The 20th and final spot in the All-Star race field will be determined through a fan vote.

What is the format and rules for the All-Star race?

The race format is as follows:

— The race will feature four stages (20 laps, 20 laps, 20 laps, 10 laps), totaling 70 laps, an ode to the 1992 edition of the same distance.

— The goal for all competitors: Earn a spot in the final 10-lap, 10-car stage.

— The winner of each of the first three stages will lock up a spot in the final stage, as long as they remain on the lead lap after the third stage.

— The cars with the best average finish in the first three stages will make up the remaining spots needed to fill the 10-car final stage.

— The remaining 10 cars will be lined up by average finish of the first three stages and given the option to pit. Exit off pit road determines starting order for final stage.
