The Driver’s Wheel…thoughts from Ty Dillon

…on how he feels about racing near his roots at Martinsville Speedway:

"It's the home track for my crew chief, and, it's really a home track for me and much of my team. For a lot of us in NASCAR, there's definitely a 'hometown bragging rights' feel to Martinsville Speedway with it being so close to Charlotte. This will be my first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville, and the first weekend I've been on track there in over three years. I can't wait to get there. With the changes we've been able to work through on the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS this season, I think all of us, Bootie, the team, we're ready for the challenge of Martinsville racing."

…on how he expects his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series debut at Martinsville will go:

"I definitely have had some good runs at Martinsville. I think I started front row in my first race there and finished second. The track is demanding, and it's a real balancing act to communicate with the crew to keep the car mechanically capable meanwhile keeping your cool behind the wheel so you don't make mistakes on your laps. A bad corner entry can take a couple laps to get over. Or passing another car might take 20 laps. And it just seems like there's no margin for error there. I love it. It's very challenging and I know our GEICO Chevy SS will be up for the test."

Crew Chief Quips:

Bootie Barker…on does he want to win at Martinsville more than any other track?

“The track I want to win the most at, is the one that's on the schedule each weekend. Really - that's what we want every time we get to the track. We're racers. But, definitely, Martinsville Speedway is my home track. Everyone wants to win at home.”

…on team prep and his own enthusiasm for racing at Martinsville:

“The early weeks of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series give us a lot of experience racing on a variety of tracks. Not much prepares you for Martinsville Speedway, though. It's really its own. The cars need very little from an aero side, not to say there's nothing, but, it's really a very mechanical track. And that's what I love about it. It's my favorite short track. There are so many elements you have to get correct. I like how demanding the track is on the mechanical aspect - not just setting up the GEICO Chevrolet SS correctly, but, wear and tear. The track is hard on brakes, gears, trannys, axles. Martinsville is very demanding.”

…on how important communication is at Martinsville:

“At Martinsville Speedway, communication really plays an integral role in having a successful weekend. The car can handle well in the turns, but not have the forward drive it needs, or it can have great forward drive and plow in the corners. The driver can over brake, or under brake. You have to work together to get the combination right and then everyone on the team has to stay calm and focused. Little mistakes at that little track can have really big ramifications.”
