PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

Ty Dillon in the GEICO Chevrolet SS Shows the Pre-Season Testing Truly Worked Well for the Germain Racing Team

Race: Camping World 500

Date: March 19, 2017

Track: Phoenix International Raceway

Start: 15

Finish: 16

Warm temperatures and relentless sunshine provided the setting for Sunday's 312-mile "Camping World 500" at Phoenix International Raceway. The one-mile oval races a bit like a short track, a bit like an intermediate track, but mostly, it's just Phoenix.

The GEICO Chevrolet SS team had the opportunity to participate in a test session earlier this year at Phoenix. In the session, they tested braking packages and honed in on a setup that Ty Dillon and the team were confident would work well for the race. With the GEICO Chevy earning the 15th spot on the starting grid for Sunday's race, it seemed the guys were correct.

The green flag waved the field into action just past 3:30 PM Eastern on Sunday and Ty Dillon had some early struggles with the GEICO Chevy. The car ultimately was very fast and maneuverable at Phoenix, but, it never was able to gain the speed it needed for the initial take off with fresh tires. The crew adjusted wedge and air pressure during the pit stops and Dillon found a track bar adjustment setting that really worked for him. He pulled to just outside the top ten, getting credit for racing as high as 13th. The GEICO Chevy worked well on longer runs - but it persisted with being a handful on fresh tires throughout the race.

Dillon finished 16th, Sunday, at Phoenix International Raceway. This is what he said about the day's efforts:

"The GEICO Chevy was good for most of our runs today. We just couldn't fire off as well as we needed to on the fresh tires. The heat today was certainly tough. We made some great adjustments to the car throughout the race. I think we are really working great as a team. I can't wait to see what we have next week in Fontana."

The next race for Ty Dillon and Germain Racing is Sunday, March 26, 2017 in Fontana, Ca. Dillon will pilot the No. 13 Twisted Tea Chevrolet in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series "Auto Club 400." The race is scheduled for 200 laps/400 miles and will air live on FOX at 3:30 PM ET.

The Driver’s Wheel…thoughts from Ty Dillon

…on racing at PIR?

“I love Phoenix. I’ve raced there a lot. Whether it was running the NASCAR K&N West Series, the Camping World Truck Series, the Xfinity Series or the two Monster Energy Cup Series starts, it’s one of the tracks I’ve ran the most. I’ve always loved it. It’s a fun, fun race track and I’m looking forward to racing in the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS there this weekend.”

Crew Chief Quips:

Bootie Barker…on setting up the GEICO Chevrolet SS for Phoenix International Raceway:

“We’ve tried setups that were more of a big track style and then tried more of a short track style for the GEICO Chevrolet SS at Phoenix. I’d say what we’ve come up with is somewhat of a hybrid setup. It’s definitely got some elements of both. The braking package is for sure short track-style. But, over the long run you definitely need some mechanical grip, and you can’t go all-in with an aerodynamic package because eventually it will give up too much. That said, you have to have good aero, it is surprisingly important at Phoenix. So, like I said, we have a hybrid of a setup for the Camping World 500."
