Kobalt 400 is 267-lap Exercise in Patience and Persistence for Ty Dillon and GEICO Chevy Crew
Race: Kobalt 400
Track: Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Date: Sunday, March 12, 2017
Starting Position: 24
Finish Position: 21
Sunday afternoon the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series took on Las Vegas Motor Speedway in warm desert temperatures in the 267-lap "Kobalt 400."
Ty Dillon qualified the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS in 24th place. The race went green, and had many green-flag laps, and, as Stage 1 drew to a close, it was evident that there could be some interesting strategy plays throughout the race. Crew chief Bootie Barker discussed some daring options with Dillon, who was enthusiastic to give them a try. Barker appreciated the sentiment, but opted for a steady, traditional game plan for the day.
At the end of the first two stages, Dillon ranked 21st and 20th. Throughout the day, he fought hard, including toughing it out through a couple wave-arounds on older tires, to end the day on the lead lap in 21st place.
Dillon talked about the 400-mile race:
“The No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS team worked really hard out there today. We did everything we could, but we just didn’t have the speed that some of the other cars did. The long green-flag runs really spread the field out. At times we were okay, but we were falling off there at the end. We fought hard and improved from where we started the race, so that’s a positive. We’ve still got some things we need to work on, but I’m proud of our effort today. We’ll get them next week in Phoenix."
Next Up for the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet: 312 laps at Phoenix International Raceway, on Sunday, March 17, 2017, for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Camping World 500 on FOX at 3:30 PM ET.

The Driver’s Wheel…thoughts from Ty Dillon
…on what makes Las Vegas unique?
“I think it’s a little bit different layout of a track. The track is starting to get more worn-out. It’s getting rougher and when you start adding characteristics like that the track takes kind of a name of its own. At Las Vegas, there are more lines or grooves that are developing that you can use all the way across the race track.”
…on the West Coast Swing?
“I love the West Coast swing. It’s a good time. Usually we stay out West and I use that time to go mountain biking and kind of explore out there a little bit. Everybody looks forward to going out West. For us, especially after our good weekend in Atlanta I know the start of the West Coast swing is something this GEICO Chevrolet SS team is really looking forward to. Vegas, Phoenix, Fontana…we are ready, to say the least.”
...on getting closer to the fans during #NASCARGoesWest:
"I have some events planned for the coming weeks that are part of #NASCARGoesWest. Anytime I get to interact with fans, whether it's on Instagram or Twitter or even signing at the GEICO display at the track, I really enjoy the time I get to spend with NASCAR fans. I'm looking forward to meeting a bunch more as we race in Vegas, Phoenix and Fontana."
Crew Chief Quips:
Bootie Barker…on racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway:
“Las Vegas Motor Speedway is all out aerodynamic war, really. The track demands so much attention to downforce, downforce, downforce. That said, it’s gotten quite bumpy, so that element is adding some complications to the package we like for a Vegas race. This GEICO Chevrolet SS team has been performing on all elements so far this season. We are really looking forward to heading out west because it puts us on three very tough different and important tracks that really can set the tone for the early part of our season.”
This weekend, our No. 13 Chevrolet SS features primary sponsorship from GEICO, major associate branding from Twisted Tea and showcases associate sponsorship relationships with Duracell, Sherwin Williams Automotive Finishes, ZAK Products, Wix Filters and Caymus Vineyards. Germain Racing is proud to be a Lincoln Electric team.
