Ty Dillon Nets Top 10 in CanAm Duel Race in Daytona
Race: CanAm Duel #2
Track: Daytona International Speedway
Date: Thursday, February 23, 2017
Starting Position: 6
Finish Position: 10
Ty Dillon drove the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS to a 10th place finish on Thursday night in Can Am Duel #2 at Daytona International Speedway and in the process he learned a lot that he hopes will be useful in Sunday's Daytona 500 race.
The 60 lap/150 mile Can Am Duel was the first points paying race of the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. The points awarded in the qualifying races this year are the first awarded in the Duels since 1971 and match the points that will be awarded for each "stage" win during regular race weekends. In both cases - the top 10 finishers are able to earn points with 10 going to the winner and 1 going to tenth place.
Ty Dillon...on how the race went for him:
"Our GEICO Chevy SS was fast. I was able to really relax out there and learn some more about racing at Daytona that I believe will help the team on Sunday. One of goals for tonight was that we wanted to finish in a points position and we achieved that goal by finishing tenth."
...on how hard it was to take his spotter's advice each lap:
"It's kind of a balance with the driver and spotter with how much you listen to their every move and how much you take into your own hands. Billy and I get better every time we do it. I thought it went really well tonight."
...on how he got through the mishap between the 48, 21 and 38:
"It was very difficult. I thought we were crashing because it happened right in front of me. I was glad they were able to save it and then I was able to pick through it. We kind of got stuck on the top when some of those cars were then falling back through the field with their fender rubs but over all it was good."
Bootie Barker was very impressed with what the team and driver were able to learn and accomplish together in tonight's 60-lap event. Next up - Ty Dillon takes the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS back on track with a new, Daytona 500 motor, for practice beginning at 1:00 PM ET on Friday, February 23rd.
"Tonight was a good effort for all of team. We were able to learn some things about our GEICO Chevrolet that will certainly help us on Sunday. More importantly, we were able to pick up a point for our finishing position and get some key practice working together and communicating that will help us be more relaxed for the Daytona 500."
