Germain Wanted Better Results at Greenville but Team is Inspired for Future

Mooresville, N.C. (04-04-2011) – When Zach Germain put his personal Toyota Camry in gear and drove toward Greenville, South Carolina, he had an idea of how he wanted the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season opener to go. Last year, he had a plan for the 150-lap event, and the plan worked. This year, from the first trip to Greenville to the return trip for the rain-postponed event, Germain concedes his plans seemingly had no bearing on the weekend’s outcome.

“We had a plan for this weekend, but, it didn’t work out at all. Still, for me, for my team and several of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series drivers, the visit to Shriners Hospital was the highlight. We were fortunate to have one of the children attend Greenville-Pickens Speedway to visit with us and it put things into perspective. I enjoyed seeing our new friend Andrew Gregory come out to the track. His positive outlook inspired me to take my ‘bad day at the race track’ in stride and to really look forward to racing at South Boston,” said Germain, who left Greenville with no damage to his No. 24 Camry despite the 11 caution flags that flew in the 150-lap event.

Germain explained that from practice, through qualifying, through the start of the race what he and his team learned in Greenville was to remain flexible so they can adapt to changing circumstances.

“Our car wasn’t very good in practice. My qualifying run didn’t go well and at the start of the race, the No. 24 Camry absolutely wouldn’t turn left leaving turn four. In short, that tells the story. What it doesn’t say is that Jamie Jones and the crew never gave up on me or our car. We pitted several times, including under green, to address the lack of front grip. That put us some laps down, but, we were able to make adjustments that kept us on the same pace with the race leaders for the remainder of the event. The car really got better as the race was in its last 50 laps or so,” said Germain.

Crew chief Jones says he knows his car needs to be different and better when they unload at South Boston.

“Zach did an excellent job, but, unfortunately, we needed to have our Camry better before we went to Greenville. We learned some things that we will take with us to test at South Boston. For race number two, we have to have a car that turns better for Zach,” said Jones.

Zach Germain started 27th and finished 25th in Saturday’s race. He ranks 25th in the K&N Pro Series standings after one event. His next race is April 16^th at South Boston Speedway.

Shriners Hospital Visit are Highlights Leading into Race Weekend

Mooresville, N.C. (03-23-2011) – This time last year, Zach Germain was looking forward to the start of his NASCAR racing career. The Columbus, OH, native, saw the Greenville-Pickens Speedway season debut as a test on so many levels. Now he looks forward to the kick off of his sophomore season with a sense of preparation and confidence. But, he still knows he and the No. 24 Germain Racing Camry team will be tested when the green flag waves on Saturday night.

“I was able to learn a ton in the ten K&N Pro Series races last year. There certainly is a difference between going into Greenville-Pickens Speedway last year and this year. Last year, I’d never raced this car or raced the track. That said, I think Greenville is going to be an all new experience for this No. 24 Germain Racing Camry team,” said Germain.

The goals have changed for the sophomore driver, who began last season focused on finishing races. This year, he and crew chief Jamie Jones expect top-ten performances.

“Our biggest goal this year it is to become a top-ten team. If we can do that, we’ve become successful. We need to practice in the top-ten, qualify and run in the top-ten. We saw in the off-season that we can run with the best teams, and, our goal is to do that every week this year,” said crew chief Jamie Jones.

Germain tested his new No. 24 Germain Racing Camry at Greenville last week. He realized then how the work he and his team did in the off-season, and the addition of NASCAR champion David Green to the spotter’s stand, have changed his vantage point leading into Saturday’s South Carolina race.

“Before we got to Greenville for the test, I had my ideas of what I expected. I had to laugh because it was still a new experience. I didn’t remember the track surface as being that rugged and, because my laps were much more aggressive than last season, our car was pretty loose off of turns two and four,” smiled the Miami University graduate. “There was some peer pressure there with so many other K&N Pro Series teams at the track for the test session, but, over the hundreds of laps we logged, I really got to see how I’ve changed as a driver.”

Green first worked with Germain in Phoenix last year.

“David has been great at helping me become more confident and aggressive. Last year, it was all about ‘defense.’ This year, we have our cautiously aggressive team motto, and, David helps me understand the different points when I should be thinking of passes and when I should not” said Germain.

Before Germain gets to see the Greenville fans again, he’ll make a couple other appearances. Wednesday night he will sign autographs at NASCAR Night at the Charlotte Bobcats game. On Friday morning, Germain will visit Shriners Hospital for Children—aside from the waving of the green flag on Saturday night, Germain considers this stop possibly the favorite part of his race weekend.

Zach Germain Energized for His Sophomore Season in No. 24 Germain.com Camry; Earned Six Top-10’s at New Smyrna in Off-Season

Mooresville, N.C. (03-04-2011) – Germain Racing’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series driver, Zach Germain, did all the off-season things racers normally do. He tested with his team, he vacationed with family and made plans for his 2011 racing season. In February, he and his crew, led by Jamie Jones, headed to New Smyrna Speedway to shake the cobwebs off at the Annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing. The experience exceeded the expectations of Germain and his crew. The Columbus, OH, native competed in NKNPSE as a rookie in 2010. He is confident the seven days of racing in Florida were a great precursor to the 2011 season which kicks off March 26^th at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.

“The best word to describe my mindset, and that of my team’s, after our World Series experience is ‘excited.’ We are all ready to go back to the race track with our No. 24 Germain.com Camry. New Smyrna showed how much I’ve grown since my rookie season. I can’t wait to get to Greenville-Pickens to see if we can improve on last year’s season opener,” said Germain, who finished tenth in his NKNPSE debut at Greenville last March.

Germain and his crew of three had a simple goal for their New Smyrna trip this year. The plan was to shake the dust off after the two months of the off-season. The results, however, far exceeded the goal.

“The World Series was seven races over ten days. Our team worked great together. The car was awesome. We had two second-place finishes and six top-ten finishes in seven races. We had one night where we had carburetor issues and had to take some green flag laps to fix the problem. But, other than that problem, we raced competitively every night. It turned into a real confidence-builder for this Germain Racing team,” said Germain.

Continuity has played a part in the huge strides Germain feels he has made coming into his second year in NASCAR. He is starting this season with the same crew from last year. Another part of the equation has been the opportunity to learn key lessons from NASCAR champion driver David Green. Green stood in on the spotter stand for five of the seven New Smyrna races and Germain says the champion’s coaching has given him a complete sense of preparation for the 2011 racing season.

“Running all seven races gave me the opportunity to put the lessons I was learning from David to use. He really worked with me to improve my confidence in passing cars. In the crate late models, it’s similar to restrictor plate racing. It’s all about momentum and car control. The World Series schedule gave me the unique opportunity to get the lessons, apply them, then discuss the results and go back and apply them again night after night,” said Germain, who also worked with long-time spotter and coach BJ McLeod throughout the New Smyrna experience.

Looking ahead to the NKNPSE season opener in South Carolina, Germain says his perspective has changed and his goals have been altered.

“Greenville was a great way for our team to kick off our rookie year. We completed all 156 laps. I’m looking for that again, but, I want those laps to come from me racing in the top-five all night. I see 2011 as a great opportunity for the Germain.com Camry team to improve our results. We have been to many of the tracks on the schedule at least once. I’ve even raced at Columbus – it was my home track,” said Germain. “When we get to each race track, we’ll immediately be working on making our Toyota faster instead of spending time on me learning the race tracks. We’re looking at the season differently. We know we can finish races, now we want to run competitively each week.”

Of the tracks new on the NKNPSE schedule for 2011, Germain and his crew are particularly curious about how the Bowman Gray weekend will go.

“A couple of our guys have been there to watch weekly racing. I just can’t believe it’s 150 laps of racing and only 37.5 miles! It’ll be a crazy race. I’ve heard the Bowman Gray fans are awesome. I’m looking forward to that race, and, of course, I can’t wait to return to my home track fans at Columbus,” said Germain.

(August 25, 2010) – With three races remaining on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East schedule for 2010, Germain Racing’s rookie driver Zach Germain and his No. 24 Germain.com Camry team are ready to put to use all they’ve learned when the series rolls into Gresham Motorsports Park for the American Fence Association 150 Presented By Mayfield Ice Creamier on Saturday night.

 “Our Germain.com Camry team was able to test at Gresham last week and it gave us all a big confidence boost. Gresham Motorsports Park is a first-class facility. The track is super fast with great banking. I think the testing we did will help our team because I’ve had a chance to figure out the line and we have a good baseline for our chassis setup,” said Germain, who captured a tenth-place finish in his first NASCAR career race at the season opener in Greenville, SC.

 Continuous improvement was a primary goal of the No. 24 team at the start of the season. After 6 races, a top-ten finish and a 14th-place rank in the championship standings, it remains the most important goal on the weekly checklist.

 “For the Germain.com Camry team to say we’ve had a good weekend at Gresham, we will want to see continued improvements in our qualifying effort and competitive racing with a strong result. We are still a young team and we’ve learned a lot together this year. We want to keep improving,” explained the 25 year-old Columbus, OH, native, who earned his best starting spot of the season in the last K&N Pro Series race at Lee USA Speedway where he lined up 12th.

 In addition to testing with the No. 24 team, Germain has been able to learn from his fellow Germain Racing teammates in the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series.

 “Germain Racing competes in all three of NASCAR’s top divisions. During the off-weeks, I’ve been able to utilize some of the resources we have here for a rookie driver. I observed our other race teams and listened to team radio communications. My perspective has evolved,” said Germain, who will be part of Funopolis Fanfest at Funopolis Family Fun Center on Friday night in Commerce.

 Jamie Jones will call the shots for Germain and the No. 24 Germain.com Camry again this weekend. Jones is looking forward to racing at Gresham after what the team learned in last week’s test session.

 “We had a good test at Gresham last week and I feel we’ll have a good, competitive day,” said Jones, who will lead the No. 24 Germain.com Camry team for the second race this season.

Mooresville, NC (08/02/2010) – Germain Racing’s rookie driver, Zach Germain, put in hours and hours of preparation before heading to Lee USA Speedway. It showed. Germain had the No. 24 Germain.com Camry in very competitive form at the New Hampshire short track where he turned in his best qualifying effort to date and spent many of the 125 laps of Friday night’s race dicing it up among the top-ten race cars and picked up a spot in the series points standings when the checkered flag waved.

“I have to say that Lee USA Speedway was a pretty good combination of the two tracks we used for testing. The banking was similar to Hickory, but the shape was a little more Caraway. I was prepared for the worst as far as grip, and it was good because I felt like the track had more grip than I expected it to,” said Germain who moved up to 14^th in the K&N Pro Series East standings following his 17^th-place finish at Lee.

When one thinks of a 3/8-mile short track, beating and banging are much more top of mind than finesse and accuracy. Germain learned that he actually was going to have to have a perfect blend of all of these at Lee.

“The track was the most line-sensitive track I’ve raced yet. Even more so than the road course. And while you’re trying to focus on the line, there are cars running into the back of you, the side of you, you are running into cars ahead of you. It was intense. We’ve raced short tracks this year, but, I think Lee was the most exciting race this year,” said Germain, who wished the team could’ve finished in the top-ten, where he had spent much of the 125 laps racing.

Qualifying was a big victory for Germain and the No. 24 Germain.com Camry. With a previous best in qualifying coming at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the Columbus, OH, native posted a 12-place time in qualifying which was 3/10s off of the pole speed.

“What I’m learning is that qualifying is about who has the most confidence, and at Lee, I felt a lot more confident. I think I made a lot of progress, overall. My car control is better and I’m feeling more confident in the car. We tried to put the car on the edge and we got 12^th. We have room for more improvement, of course, but as a team we are definitely moving in the right direction,” said Germain.

Germain’s biggest fans, mom, Kim, and dad, Steve, agreed Lee was a huge transformation for their son.

“My mom and dad actually watched the race from the grandstands at Lee. My mom sent me a ton of text messages afterward telling me how excited she was – that she was screaming ‘go Zach go’ and that it was really fun for her watching how are team performed at Lee,” said Germain.

 Mooresville, N.C. (July 23, 2010) – Rookie driver Zach Germain has raced on a wide variety of tracks this season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. This week, the series returns to the type of track that reminds Germain of his roots—Lee USA Speedway, a 3/8-mile short track.

 “This weekend will definitely bring back fond memories of everyone at Columbus Motor Speedway. Lee USA Speedway is an old, short race track and from the photos I’ve seen, it reminds me of my hometrack,” said Germain, the 25 year old from Columbus, OH.

 Unlike when he first raced a short track, Germain is going into the Lee bullring with hundreds upon hundreds of laps of short track experience—much of it very fresh in his mind.

 “The No. 24 team here at Germain Racing has been very busy since our last K&N Pro Series East race at Lime Rock. We have had the Germain.com Camry on track testing several times in the last couple weeks and we’ve logged a ton of laps. At Hickory last week we completed a 130-lap tire run which really taught me a lot about how my car will change throughout the race this Friday night at Lee,” explained Germain.

 Ever studious, the Miami University of Ohio graduate is excited about the latest ‘professor’ to lead his efforts with the No. 24 Germain.com Camry.

 “From the beginning of this season, I knew that our main focus each time we fire up the Germain.com Camry was education. It was about me learning the race cars, the tracks, and how to communicate with the crew. Jaime (“JJ”) Jones will call the shots for me this week at Lee USA and he’s been a great asset to have on our team through our last couple test sessions. JJ has worked with young, rookie drivers in NASCAR and he has a great way of letting you learn your lessons on your own in the car,” said Germain.

 One such lesson Germain learned was that slower can be much faster.

 “As we were working on older and older tires in our test sessions, I realized I needed to feather the throttle more to control the car. It turned out the lap times were much faster when I was running at 75 or 85 percent throttle. JJ was very excited to see me learn this ‘on my own.’ I’m looking forward to having him along with our No. 24 team this week at Lee,” said Germain.

 The Germain.com Camry races at Lee USA Speedway on Friday, July 30th, at 8:30 PM Eastern. The 125-lap race will be broadcast on SPEED on Thursday, August 5th at 6:00 PM Eastern.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Decisions, decisions. For Zach Germain, there really was no decision to be made.

"Race cars or sell cars?" the Bexley, Ohio, native recalled of weighing his future options late in the summer of 2009. "It was the easiest decision I've ever had to make."

As the son of Steve Germain, who owns Germain Motor Company with his brothers, the 25-year-old Zach got a relatively late start in racing. Despite Germain Motorsports fielding entries in each of NASCAR's top three national series -- Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Trucks -- there was very little pressure on Zach Germain to pursue a racing career.

In fact, he says, there was none.

"It was definitely me putting the pressure on everybody else to get into racing," he said. "The more I've been around it, I've wanted to pursue it more and more."

As hard as it is to believe, Zach Germain -- a rookie in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East in 2010 -- is just four years into his career as a driver. He spent parts of three seasons in Legends cars at Columbus Motor Speedway near his hometown, and then in 2009 competed full-time at that track in its Super Late Model division.

Germain said he only got started in racing when his family did. And despite Germain Racing's success in places like the Camping World Truck Series, the organization is still a relative newcomer to NASCAR.

"We're pretty new when you compare us to the other bigger teams in the sport," Germain said. "We got started in NASCAR in 2004, and I didn't start racing myself until 2006.

"It wasn't something that I set out to do when I was younger. But I saw my family getting into NASCAR and that got me thinking. I've always had a fascination with cars from very early on."

And while some of the other drivers he races against in the K&N Pro Series have been racing since they were seven or eight years old, Germain hasn't. Which is not to say he had no experience behind the wheel of a car.

It just wasn't a race car.

"I've been driving cars around the parking lot since I was a kid," Germain said as he started laughing. "When I was 12 years old, I could drive a manual (shift). I wasn't out racing go-karts like Cole Whitt or some of the others, but I was running '100-lap races' on a new car lot.

"Instead of running into walls, I was running into other new cars."

Germain always viewed his future in the family business of selling cars. When he headed off to Miami (Ohio) University, he'd still never turned a competitive lap behind the wheel of a stock car. In fact, it wasn't until he was well on his way to earning a political science degree that he ended up racing Legends.

Germain figured racing would be something fun on the side while he looked at heading to law school, following in the footsteps of his older sister.

In a strange twist of fate, though, a broken hand and wrist in 2008 -- suffered while racing his Legend car -- sidelined Germain for half that season. It was then that he realized how difficult it was to sit on the sidelines and not race.

The next season, he was in a Super Late Model. He finished seventh in Columbus Motor Speedway's standings in 2009. This year, he jumped into the deep end of a racing career with both feet.

"I just knew that if I was really going to do this, I needed to pursue it to a much greater degree than I  was," said Germain, who has one top-10 in five races this season in the No. 24 Germain.com Toyota. "I knew that if I hadn't have poured myself into it, I always would have looked back later on and wondered, 'What if?'"

This year, Germain packed up and moved to Mooresville, N.C., -- the NASCAR hub -- and cleared out a conference room above the race shop where his cars are prepared. That's where he lives now. Every morning, he's up at 6:45 and joins the guys 15 minutes later working on the team’s K&N Series cars.

For a driver sporting a trademark 'faux-hawk' atop his head -- a strip of hair spiked tall along the middle of his head -- image is, well, everything.

"I know that there are some drivers in the past in this sport who haven't had the best, well ..." Germain pauses, choosing his words carefully, perhaps to draw from that political science background. "Let's just say, some teams would rather not have drivers around because they're not the hardest workers in the world.

"I wasn't going to let them say that about me. I don't want people to ever be able to hold it against me that I'm the son of the team owner with all the money, and I'm lackadaisical and not approaching everything like it matters. ... Sometimes I think that makes me work even harder at this."

Germain feels that being older than most traditional rookies gives him a maturity to understand the bigger picture. That maturity also helps with a steep learning curve.

"It's definitely a learning curve," Germain said. "And I know I've made mistakes at a much higher level than I probably should have. Unfortunately, that's the truth -- I just haven't had the seat time at the local tracks over the years. But everyone's been really gracious with me and supportive, and I feel like as long as I don't make the same mistakes twice, they'll continue to help me and be supportive.

"Every type of car I've raced -- going from Legends to Super Late Models, from Super Late Models to the K&N cars -- it's been night and day different. Every lap I get more and more comfortable and learn a lot. I've learned a tremendous amount in five races. Look at Iowa Speedway -- the biggest track I'd ever been on and I wrecked early. But I learned a lot, and I wish I could go back now and try again."

Despite the trials and tribulations, Germain is as committed to racing as ever.

"There is nothing better than racing cars," said Germain, who has no timetable for a graduation from the K&N Pro Series but has an ultimate goal of racing a Camping World Truck. "The rush, the atmosphere, all of it is unbelievable to me.

"I told my dad the other day and he laughed at me, but I'm living the dream. I'm so fortunate to be able to put things on hold for a while and chase my dream like this. I'm just trying to do my part to make that happen."

Mooresville, N.C. (07-05-2010) – In his first road course race, NASCAR K&N Pro Series East rookie driver Zach Germain finished 16^th in the No. 24 Germain.com Camry. The results were a handsome payoff for the 25 year-old from Columbus, Ohio, who finished just a couple spots behind some of the instructors that had tutored him on the mechanics of racing at the 1.54-mile Lime Rock Park circuit in Lakeville, CT.

“I really enjoyed my first road course race. It was an extreme challenge for my physical endurance and mental stamina, but I think our finish showed that the driver and the crew were up for the test. I prepared for the K&N 100 by attending the Skip Barber Racing School. Getting to know the course helped so that I could focus on technique and getting the car adjusted for the race. Tom Ackerman, our shock specialist on the No. 30 Germain.com Tundra, came to Lime Rock with us this weekend. He and the No. 24 Germain.com Camry team made some great adjustments to the car. It handled the right-hand turns very well,” said Germain who ranks 15th in the K&N Pro Series East points standings after six races.

The weekend kicked off with Germain hearing a new but very familiar voice on his team radio as he put the No. 24 Germain.com Camry in the top-20 on the practice charts.

“My dad did a great job in his spotting debut. He had no idea he was getting put to work when he got to the track, but we needed extra spotters for practice. He did a great job. When I heard his voice, it reminded me of the virtue that he and my mom preach to me when they are at the race track – patience,” smiled Germain. “After the first run in practice, I had a lot of confidence in our team and in what I’d learned about getting around the course. At other new tracks we’ve gone to, I’ve had to commit time in first practice to learning the lines around the track. At Lime Rock, I already knew the line from the Skip Barber school and it worked very well for the Germain.com Camry. I was comfortable in the car and could focus on pedal technique and positioning the car for each corner.”

The 66-lap race was slowed by only three cautions for a total of eight yellow-flag laps. The long green-flag runs allowed the 29-car field to space out over the mile and a half circuit.

“The long green flag runs worked out great. The field spaced out pretty quickly and I was able to get in the zone so well that the cars around me didn’t bother me at all,” explained Germain. “We had one bobble. I didn’t get the Germain.com Camry slowed down heading into the chicane on lap 35. I spun but was able to keep the car on course. It wouldn’t re-start and it cost us a couple laps waiting for a push-start. If there was a disappointing moment in the race weekend, I guess that was it. But, the weekend was a great experience. The guys did a great job with adjustments and we’re all anxious to get to our next race at Lee.”
